Let's take a look at France today... So many people here and around the world are under the impression that “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” is the slogan for the French nation. This is not entirely true…

Dating back to their first revolution in 1789, the slogan originally was «Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité jusqu'à la mort!»

«Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité», on the other hand, was only adopted as the country’s official slogan under the Third Republic in 1870.

A surveillance camera on the façade of the Crédit Municipal bank in Paris’ 4th arrondissement (the Marais). The slogan is engraved on both sides of this entrance at 16, rue des Blancs Manteaux, to avoid such an unfortunate juxtaposition, the camera would have to have been mounted at the top center of the doorway. —photo by David Henry
